I am a sucker for anything moderately vintage.
Visited Carpenter and Cook today with Glenda after lusting after pictures of their beautiful, lovely, Alice-in-wonderlandesque cafe. And the fact that they served pretty quirky looking tarts on china plates was a huge plus point, as well.
You can imagine in a cafe like this, I could easily take a half hour making up my mind on what to eat. But, no, mind was set. A tart--a very specific tart--was calling out to me from her perch on an ivory antique cake-stand behind the glass display.
Behold, the passionfruit meringue tart.
Such a beauty! Look at her perfect meringue peaks! Her golden-brown buttery shell! Her heart of creamy, tangy, zesty, passionfruity curd!
I do not exaggerate. The tart was perfection. And being a daughter to a woman who takes pride in making one of the best lemon meringue pies on earth, I wasn't expecting to be impressed. The meringue was perfectly fluffy and sweet. The curd was like velvet. And sour! So perfectly balanced with the sugary meringue cloud.
(see? I am in love. Be still, by beating heart!)
Only 'meh' point: the sweetcrust was a little too tough to crack through. Although, it may have been my reluctance to destroy this work of art. Had to get Glenda (potential serial killer) to hack through it with my fork.
Let's see if I can do my narration of today's teatime menu: Glenda's Banoffee tart and iced mocha. My passionfruit meringue tart and pomegranate oolong tea.
(please take a second to admire the china)
They also sell the most adorable range of teacups and saucers, typewriters, clocks, teabags. Their homemade granola, marshmallows, jams and saucers were calling out to me (buy, me, Sasha, even though I could never fit in your already-bursting-at-the-seams hand-carry suitcase back to the UK)
Needless to say, I am grateful I left my NETS at home (but some homemade granola would have been lovely)
I will be back, NETS in tow. Also with a bigger appetite because the scones/quiche/cakes/loaves/buns/sandwiches/financiers(read: everything) looked like gastronomical perfection.
